You pay for a pricey Internet connection for your home. You expect your devices to blast through websites, games, movies and music… until you find that your speeds are not what your provider said they would be.
Your Router could be the culprit.
Routers are the devices that take your connection and shares it to everything in your home. The problem with some routers is their use of a spectrum that is identical to everyone else’s router. This traffic on a single spectrum wavelength is difficult for devices to parse. If your neighbors all have cheap routers (and chances are they do), you are all broadcasting and receiving to and from each router within your router’s range. Many routers have different channels within the spectrum, and if the neighbors know what they are doing (chances are they don’t – which means they are using the default channel), they will choose a less trafficked channel to help avoid this type of issue.
The better routers also have dual bands, so your devices don’t all have to connect using the same band/channel. Your own devices will perform better if you are using multiple bands and connect using the best one for that device. At my home, I have a router that broadcasts two different bands and I can name each band a different router name, so that I can tell which devices can see the other band. Not all devices receive both bands (although newer ones are coming out with that capability).
Need to see some good routers? Check out the ones below that have dual bands and allow you to program them for optimal speed.
